Songfacts®:

  • "Bad Friday" is the opening track to Umphrey's McGee's ninth studio album, The London Session. Recorded in just 12 hours in the renowned Abbey Road Studios, the album is a mixture of previously recorded songs and unreleased new material. "Bad Friday" had never been recorded before for an Umphrey's McGee album, so the song only appears on The London Session.
  • Umphrey's McGee's guitarist and singer, Brendan Bayliss, had written the song on Good Friday in 2013. Bayliss jokingly labeled the Pro Tools session as "Bad Friday," but he ended up just keeping the title. In our interview with Bayliss, he explained the quick writing process for the song: "My son was sitting at the keyboard with me hitting buttons as I played. We stumbled across a cool sound that the opening riff was based on. I put a simple bass line under it and took the melody/lyrics from an older song we never used and that was it."
