Songfacts®:

  • This was the song that put Vanity Fare on the map in the United States, and it celebrates how beautiful the early morning is. It was their biggest hit up to that time, and only "Hitchin' A Ride" did better on the charts. It's fondly remembered by their fans, particularly in their native Great Britain. >>

  • This was one of the earliest songs written by Mike Leander and Eddie Seago, who are best known for their work with Gary Glitter. Leander also arranged strings for The Rolling Stones.
  • This was from the album The Sun, The Wind and Other Things, whose title was a poke at American family group The Cowsills' hit single, "The Rain, The Park And Other things."

  • Kindherbqueen from FloridaI love the version of this song more than any other. But I’m curious to know what is meant when he says, “But I come to”. I’ve done some searching, with no luck. Anyone have an idea?
  • Frank from CaliforniaI always thought that a girl sang this song.
  • Wolfgang Dr. Dahlke from Berlin, GermanyIn 1972 I sat in as a drummer for a choir that sang "Early In The Morning" for an LP Produktion, they made it sound like a Jazz standard of the 40s, so I played brushes. And it wasn't until 10 minutes ago (May, 2024) that I heard the original Pop version...and find it quite amazing!
  • Adrian Smith from Settle YorkshireI used to work for The Daily Mirror and had the honour of selling ad space to Mr Seago when he was working at a leading ad agency. Copies of Melody Maker Top Twenty Charts were plastered all over the wall of his office!! He loved to plot the movement of the record sales!
  • Moanin' Lisa from Chillicothe Mo.I still love this song & I even hear it played in the Walmart store. Takes me back to '69 when I was a kid. It had a bouncy sound to it & the lyrics were upbeat. On this hit, "Early In The Morning" the Kansas City area rock & roll radio stations had it ranked higher in their top ten. I'm surprised that Billboard had it at only #12. Our area radio stations ranked it higher & I think that is better reflection of its popularity here in 1969. Over and out !
  • Barry from Sauquoit, NyOn November 16th 1969, "Early in the Morning" by Vanity Fare entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #77; and on January 25th, 1970 it peaked at #12 {for 1 week} and spent 13 weeks on the Top 100...
The British quintet had two other Top 100 hits; "Hitchin' A Ride" {#5 in 1970} and "(I Remember) Summer Morning" {#98 in 1970}.
  • Dean from Hoover, AlWow! I never knew that Vanity Fare sang this song! One of my favorites when I was a kid!
