Songfacts®:

  • Vaults are a South London electronica trio comprising Blythe Pepino, Barney Freeman and Ben Vella. They formed in 2013 and first gained recognition when their song "One Last Night" featured on the Fifty Shades Of Grey movie soundtrack.
  • In 2016 Vaults covered Randy Crawford's song "One Day I'll Fly Away" for the annual John Lewis Christmas advert. The tune was originally a #2 UK hit for the American singer in 1980. Ben Vella told NME that it was John Lewis' people who chose the track. He added. "Blythe was a big fan of the original Randy Crawford version – she knew it backwards – so it made for an easy recording session."
  • The John Lewis Christmas advert is one of the UK's most hotly anticipated TV commercial of the year. Soundtracks to John Lewis festive ads in the previous years have featured covers of classic tracks by Taken By Trees, Ellie Goulding, Slow Moving Millie, Gabrielle Aplin, Lily Allen, Tom Odell and Aurora. Ben Vella explained how Vaults landed the gig.

"They got in touch with us, they thought Blythe's vocal would suit the direction they were going in. We met the arranger Chris Hill and worked with him closely before going into Abbey Road to record it. We got to work with a huge orchestra and choir and hang out in The Beatles' Room 2 – the whole day was amazing."

  • Danny Ironstone from Los AngelesA brilliant piece of words set to music, or the other way around. Will is the master lyricist and has penned many a great lyric. I personally prefer the Joe Sample Laylah Hathaway version, but it's just a personal singer preference. Randy C is also a great singer and did an incredible job. I think Randy shines with a mid-tempo groove behind her, whereas Laylah is a pure ballad singer to the bone. Both women are top tier, top of the food chain singers!
