Songfacts®:

  • Michigan native Wilbart McCoy III is a singer-songwriter who records under the name of Vedo. He got his start in music after moving to Atlanta aged 14, and in 2013 he appeared on the fourth season of The Voice. McCoy reached the Top 12 before being eliminated, but caught the attention of Usher, who became a mentor to him. Vedo released his breakout single, "4 Walls," in 2015, and three years later contributed to the writing of Lil Dicky and Chris Brown's smash hit, "Freaky Friday." This R&B banger is his first Hot 100 song as an artist.
  • Vedo recorded the song for his For You album. He explained in a Genius video that he needed a track for the record that motivated and uplifted women. When he received Paul Cabbin and Tariq Beats' production, he fell in love with it and uploaded the beat to Protools before freestyling the first verse and the hook. Then Vedo put on the headphones, hit record and just went for it. He freestyled the whole song, melodies and lyrics, and pressed stop. Afterwards he cleaned up everything so it made sense, but estimates 75-80% of the song was freestyled.
  • Vedo told Flaunt "You Got It" was one of the last songs he wrote for his For You album. At the time there was a lot going on about women's empowerment and he wanted to do something that went hand in hand with the movement. "I knew this song had to be along the lines of bossing up, encouraging people to fix your credit," he said. "Real motivational, but not corny at the same time."
  • The song went viral on TikTok after users started creating videos using its pre-chorus.
  • Vedo enlisted Young Dolph and Money Man for the song's official remix. He also recorded a second remix featuring Ty Dolla $ign.
