Songfacts®:

  • Like the Horatio Nicholls composition "Amy", the Vernon Dalhart recording of this song by composer Al Sherman and lyricist Howard Johnson begins with the sound of an aircraft. And a snatch of both "The Star Spangled Banner" and "La Marseillaise", presumably to symbolise the United States and France; Charles Lindbergh took off in The Spirit Of St Louis from Roosevelt Field, Garden City, Long Island on May 20, 1927, and his historic flight was completed when he landed at Le Bourget Field, Paris, 34 hours later. Understandably, this song, which was recorded on May 23, 1927, was an instant hit, for sentimental if not for aesthetic reasons.

Others may prefer Al Stewart's "Lindy Comes To Town". >>>
