Songfacts®:

  • This is a comedy song of sorts, although it isn't very funny, but it is an important landmark because it was performed by its composer Victoria Wood on the TV talent show New Faces, where she came in first.

In a BBC TV program Victoria Wood: Seen On TV (screened December 21, 2009 and again on April 21, 2016 - the day after her death), she explained that she only got onto the program by subterfuge, a friend of hers who worked at the studio put her application at the top of the pile!

In spite of this momentary triumph, it took her years of hard work to become an overnight success, her second big break was when she was recruited as what might be called songwriter in residence for the consumer affairs program That's Life two years later. Although she went on to become a big name in UK domestic television, more as a scriptwriter and comedienne than a songwriter, "Lorraine" is probably best quietly forgotten. >>>
