Songfacts®:

  • Gill wrote this song with Amy Grant, who he married on March 10, 2000, about a month before the album was released. The song was inspired by their union, describing their "wounded hearts" that came together as one. Grant and Gill met in 1993 when both were married. In 1998, Gill and his wife Janis divorced after 18 years of marriage, and the following year Grant split with her husband of 16 years, the singer Gary Chapman. Grant and Gill took a lot of stick for breaking up their marriages to form their own, and this song reflects faith that guided them. "It's as natural as breathing," Gill sings.
  • Amy Grant made her mark in Christian Contemporary music, so when Gill writes a song dealing with religion or faith, he often consults her. "She operates all of her life in the most truthful way of anybody I've ever seen," Gill told us. "I'm not as knowledgeable about the history of Christianity or the Bible or that stuff like she is. Every now and then I'd write a song that was pointed in that direction, and I'd have to go ask her, 'Is this right?'"
