Songfacts®:

  • Written by guitarist Pete Gage, Vinegar Joe performed "Proud To Be (A Honky Woman)" on The Old Grey Whistle Test on October 30, 1973, and that was probably as good as it got for them in their four-year, three-album career. The intense American flavor of the song, this performance and indeed of the band make it difficult to believe lead vocalist Elkie Brooks was born less than 30 miles from George Formby and that rhythm guitarist/vocalist Robert Palmer was born just down the road from Leeds troubadour Michael Chapman.

The song was the first track on their final album, Six Star General, which like the other two was released on Island Records. >>>

  • Rob Packer from CheshireOne of the best live bands on the university circuit in the early 1970s. I saw them at University Hall, Cardiff in 1971 or 73 and they were terrific. Yesterday I found online a box-set of the 3 albums mentioned above and they still sound great. Why wouldn’t they ? - my taste in music hasn’t changed.
