Songfacts®:

  • In this melancholy piano ballad, Vonda Shepard is searching for an escape from a problematic world. "'Disappear' is a song I had to turn myself inside out to write," she explained. "I wrote it in the midst of the pandemic, but also in the middle of the terrible social injustice that was ubiquitous. I found the blatant racism coming out in force so horrible and crushing that I wanted to literally disappear from this planet that I loved, but no longer recognized. I live in a kind of fantasy world that I create in my mind, which is why I use a lot of references to nature, specifically the sea. The chorus is uplifting, despite the desolate nature of things:

I think life is beautiful, despite this
Maybe there is too much wrong to right this, I don't know
    "
  • This is the second single from Shepard's ninth studio album, Red Light, Green Light, following "Shine Your Light."
  • Shepard's husband, Mitchell Froom, produced the album and played keyboards on several tracks. Froom previously produced albums for Crowded House, Bonnie Raitt, and Suzanne Vega.
  • Froom co-produced the track with David Boucher, the engineer on Shepard's From The Sun and Chinatown albums.
  • The album is Shepard's first studio release since 2015's Rookie. In 2019, she issued the album Vonda: Live, which featured live takes of some of her famous tunes, including the Ally McBeal theme, "Searchin' My Soul."
