Songfacts®:

  • "On Chill" finds Wale taking it slow in developing a romance with a new girlfriend; they've both had negative experiences in past relationships.

I'm tryna hear all your problems so I can lighten the load
No you not fighting alone 'cause I'm protectin' from 'em, so chill

Because of his heartache, the rapper understands why his fragile love interest needs time before committing to a new relationship.
  • Jeremih croons the chorus. The R&B singer is less sympathetic to the girl than Wale is.

We've been on a tragedy for months
Why can't you agree with me for once?

Jeremih's hook is terse; he seems frustrated that the girl is still reliving her heartbreak.
  • This song is the third time that Jeremih has jumped on one of Wale's tracks. Their previous collaborations were 2011's "That Way" and 2014's "The Body."
  • Wale and Jeremih wrote the song with Eric Bellinger, who also croons the outro. Los Angeles producer and songwriter Bellinger has also penned tunes for the likes of Jennifer Hudson & Ne-Yo ("Think Like A Man"), Chris Brown ("Fine China") and Nicki Minaj ("Anaconda").
  • "On Chill" samples Raphael Saadiq's track "Ask Of You" from the soundtrack of the 1995 film Higher Learning.
  • Wale kicks off his first verse by interpolating some 2Pac rhymes.

I'm gettin' mine like fine wine measured in time
Many other brothers loved you but this pleasure is mine

The lyrics are from 2Pac's second verse on his 1997 collaboration with John B, "Are U Still Down." Wale explained in a Genius attribution: "I just always thought that it was real smooth. I just paid homage to one of the greatest of all time, and setting a tone for where I'm going on the record."
