Songfacts®:

  • The lead single from Warpaint's self-titled album first emerged when a snippet was featured in an advertisement for Calvin Klein on September 25, 2013. The full song was released the following month.
  • The Warpaint album is self titled as an allusion to the band's togetherness. "None of us had ever experienced that cohesiveness in the band, ever until the full of us started playing," singer/guitarist Emily Kokal told NME. "We've really come to know how to play together."
  • The song was written quickly by the band's Theresa Wayman and Jenny Lee Lindberg. As Warpaint toyed with the tune in the studio it became too poppy and immediate for them. Eventually producer Flood run out of time so they sent it, along with another Warpaint track, "Feeling Alright." to Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich. He recalled to NME: "The increased pressure due to time running out and the ever decreasing circles of decision–making meant a couple of songs were in danger of slipping through the net. Sometimes is really good to get some perspective from outside – it can be the quickest way out of the quicksand – so they asked me. It wasn't work, just more like trying to be useful."

"I really liked the tracks and could hear how I might be led to bring out what I felt about them," he continued. "My job was to take what was there and present what I thought was coherent – like doing a really satisfying jigsaw puzzle, hopefully with no pieces upside down and all in roughly the right places."
