Songfacts®:

  • On August 25, 2018, We Came As Romans clean vocalist Kyle Pavone died from an accidental overdose at the age of 28. The band was due to go on tour with Bullet for My Valentine the following month; though they were still grieving, the remaining five members decided to honor Kyle by going ahead with the dates. This song is about that difficult time.

Carry the weight, broken and chained
All of my suffering on display

Guitarist and lyricist Joshua Moore explained to Kerrang: "It was no secret what we were going through, and everyone was seeing us going through it, right up on stage. I don't think I could have written those lyrics the way I did if it wasn't for that experience, of not being able to get out of my bed until 6pm every day. It felt like the most vulnerable time. That's why Dave (Stephens) screams, 'Grief and open wounds never heal.'"
