Songfacts®:

  • This is the only Weezer song with a female lead vocal - it's sung by Rachel Haden, who was a member of the band That Dog before joining The Rentals, who often perform this song at their shows. Weezer lead singer Rivers Cuomo wrote the song from a female point of view, and asked Haden to sing it.
  • The song was intended for a concept album Rivers Cuomo was working on called "Songs From The Black Hole," which was never released. Cuomo explained the album's concept to Rolling Stone, November 15, 2007: "There's this crew - three guys and two girls and a mechanoid - that are on this mission in space to rescue somebody, or something. The whole thing was really an analog for taking off, going out on the road and up the charts with a rock band, which is what was happening to me at the time I was writing this and feeling like I was lost in space."

Cuomo, who was enrolled at Harvard at the time, decided to scrap the space theme and went with a Madame Butterfly theme for what would be their album Pinkerton. "I Just Threw Out the Love of My Dreams" was finally released on the Japanese version of their E.P. The Good Life in 1997. >>
