Songfacts®:

  • This song, which calls for perseverance, hard work and a desire for sports immortality was penned by Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo as an "unofficial theme song" for the American football team in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The band debuted the motivational track on their A.P.E. Radio station on Friday (June 11) at 12pm, the day before the USA's first game against England in the competition.
  • Avid soccer fan Cuomo also wrote a tune for the USA team after their exit from the 2006 World Cup. That song was originally called "Our Time Will Come" and eventually resurfaced on his 2008 album Alone II: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo with the title of "My Day Is Coming." In addition, he recorded a video for the song "Lover In the Snow" which shows the Weezer frontman training for and scoring a goal at Mia Hamm's Celebrity Soccer Challenge.
  • Cuomo told MTV News about the track: "I tried to make a soccer anthem back in 2006, but it was right after we got knocked out [of the World Cup] in pretty humiliating fashion in the first round, so it came out really kind of sad. And this time around, I was just feeling super optimistic and kind of badass after our performance in the Confederations Cup last year, and especially around this player [Clint] Dempsey, who seems to have this badass attitude and ability to step up and put the ball in the back of the net, even when we're playing against the giants. So I wrote a song, which hopefully captures some of that confidence and swagger in the face of pretty daunting odds."
  • The song may have helped in a small way the American team battle to a 1-1 draw with heavily favored England in its opening match. "After we premiered it, I heard from the U.S. soccer Twitter," Cuomo beamed. "They tweeted at me and said they downloaded the song and put it in the playlist for the pre-game listen, before the U.S./England match."
