Songfacts®:

  • Several of White Denim's albums have alluded to the band's trouser-referencing name - Fits and Stiff being two of them. However, the title of their eighth album have nothing to do with jeans. Instead it has a double-meaning, applyling not only to White Denim's occupation of supplying entertainment to an audience, but also to human behavior in which people typically act a part rather than being who they really are. Co-vocalist Steven Terebecki explained to Uncut:

"The title has a number of connotations, but there is also a song called 'Performance' on the record, and that song seems like a good representation of the record. All our album titles over the years have had do meanings, but most of the time it was referring to jeans - but this one kind of steps outside of the adjectives describing jeans!"
  • James Petralli explained the song's meaning to Relix magazine: "The lyric is messing with definitions of 'performance' as well, just taking a single word, interpreting it a few different ways and seeing what feelings come out when doing that."
