Songfacts®:

  • This duet by Whitney Houston and CeCe Winans is an uplifting song about leaning on a friend for support when needed. The song is from the movie Waiting To Exhale and was released as the fourth single from the soundtrack album.
  • CeCe Winans is a gospel singer who is best known for her recordings with her brother BeBe Winans. The duo's accolades include three Grammy Awards and nine Dove Awards. When this single peaked at #8 on the Hot 100, Winans achieved her first top ten single. (Check out one of their songs here).
  • The song was written and produced by Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds. He recalled to Billboard magazine in 2011: "Forest Whitaker gave me a call because he was directing Waiting To Exhale and was interested in me scoring the film, as well as writing songs. Knowing it was a Whitney film, it was kind of expected that she'd sing, but it wasn't a guarantee. But she did have rights to decide who would be a part of the soundtrack. Everyone was chosen or agreed to by Whitney. I can't remember any of the names we crossed off-and I wouldn't say them anyway [laughs]. But I remember she really wanted to do something with CeCe [Winans]. That's how the song 'Count on Me' happened."
