Songfacts®:

  • Jud Friedman and Allan Rich wrote this song for the Whitney Houston-starring movie, The Bodyguard. They also penned James Ingram's chart-topping R&B ballad, "I Don't Have the Heart."
  • Originally, "Run To You" was a breakup song inspired by the recent ending of a relationship Rich had been going through. The tune was approved for the film by Houston, the movie's director Mick Jackson, and Arista Records Chairman/CEO Clive Davis. However, about a month later, Jackson called, saying they wanted to use it earlier in the movie when Houston and Costner fall in love, instead of when they're breaking up. So he asked the songwriters to rewrite the words to make it a love song instead of a breakup tune. Rich and Friedman penned an entirely new lyric, retaining only the title from the original song.
  • David Foster produced this song along with the first two singles from The Bodyguard soundtrack: "I Will Always Love You" and "I Have Nothing."
  • This was nominated for a 1992 Academy Award for Best Original Song, but lost out to "A Whole New World" from Aladdin.
  • The British singer Leanne Mitchell released a cover of "Run to You" as her debut single on June 3, 2012 after winning the first series of the British television singing competition The Voice. She performed the song twice on the show.
  • Future Pop star Christina Aguilera practiced this song for hours to prove she had the vocal range needed to sing "Reflection" on the Mulan soundtrack.
