Songfacts®:

  • In this song, when Willie Nelson goes on the road again, he brings along something to remember a loved one: a photo he keeps in his shirt pocket so she'll be next to his heart at every show. They may not be together, but this way he can take her everywhere he goes.
  • "Everywhere I Go" is part of Nelson's Teatro album, which he recorded with producer Daniel Lanois at Lanois' studio in Oxnard, California. The studio was housed in what used to be a Mexican theater called El Teatro - thus the album title. Before they started working, Lanois asked Nelson about what kind of music he played early in his career, and Willie told him about playing multi-tiered clubs where people wanted to dance. Before Nelson arrived, Lanois had his crew set up the studio to look like a Cuban nightclub, so when he recorded, it felt more like a performance from his early years.
  • Emmylou Harris sang backup on this one. Harris had worked with producer Daniel Lanois before; she recorded her 1995 album Wrecking Ball at his Kingsway Studios in New Orleans with Lanois producing. For the Teatro album, she and Nelson also recorded "The Maker," a song Lanois wrote and originally released on his 1989 album Acadie.
