This slow and sentimental waltz was written by Willie Nelson with his longtime co-producer Buddy Cannon. The producer explained the genesis of this song lay in him overhearing Nelson consoling a friend who had lost a loved one.

"She had obviously lost someone very recently-her husband, or somebody-and she was talking to Willie about it…I heard the woman say, 'I don't think I'll ever get over this.'" Cannon recalled, "And Willie looked at her and he said: 'It's not something you get over, but it's something you'll get through.' That just stuck in my brain. I tried but I couldn't get that thought out of my head for two or three years. I knew there was a song in there. Finally, one day I texted him about it, and we kicked it around. It ended up being one of my favorite songs."
