Songfacts®:

  • Wilson Phillips covered four different stages of love with the first four hit singles from their debut album. "Hold On" is getting over a love gone bad; "Release Me" is of the "I don't want you back" varietal; "Impulsive" is giddy in love; and "You're In Love" is letting go of love, accepting that he doesn't want her back.

Three of these four singles were #1 hits in America; only "Impulsive" (#4) didn't get there.
  • The group wrote this song with their producer, Glen Ballard, who later produced Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill album. Speaking with Songfacts, Ballard recalled his first meeting with Wilson Phillips: "The first time I met them, they came in and sang a song a cappella for me and it completely blew me out of my chair. They'd been singing together since they were like 4 years old, and the Wilsons were blood sisters, but Chynna was their sister too in the sense that they had grown up together. They sang a million songs together and had already worked it out, so I didn't really have to do anything in terms of their sound - I just had to find a vehicle to put that sound in."
  • Chynna Phillips sang lead on this track, but most of the vocals are harmonies between the three members. The song was written by the group along with Glen Ballard.

  • Sasha from Stockton A powerful ballad about letting go. To me, they were lovers then became friends. He’s in love, and even though her feelings came back for him, she’s letting go.
  • Kent from Greensburg, PaThis song was their longest number one single on the charts, staying there for a month on the Adult Contemporary charts.
  • Michael Scott from Punta Gorda, FlChyna and Carnie we all know about, can someone tell me about the very cute middle short length redhead singing the back up.
