Songfacts®:

  • In October 2008, bass player and vocalist Martin Turner told a fan this song had been inspired by the second movement of Ravel's G Major Piano Concerto. This should come as no surprise to any musicologist; as a fair number of rock musicians are classically trained. Martin Turner actually started his musical career as a choirboy, and could sing music straight off the sheet.
  • "Everybody Needs A Friend" is a downtempo sort of love song marred only by the grammatical mistake "It makes me want to try and understand," but unlike Matt Monro's "Portrait Of My Love" (with lyric by David West) it is just about forgivable here. >>>
