Songfacts®:

  • According to the band's official biography, "Master of Disguise" is a solo effort by Andy Powell, his first such for the band. It was written on acoustic guitar, and "The lyric comes from the feeling of alienation that I first had when the band settled in America in 1975 and the shock of living in a new culture."

Three decades later, the same Andy Powell with a mid-Atlantic accent (but minus his hair!) introduced a violin dominated acoustic version of the song at the 2005 Ashfest in Scranton, Pennsylvania with very similar words: "This is about being a stranger in a strange land, something I definitely don't feel touring once again in the United States of America... this is kind of an alien song..." >>>
