Wizkid is a Nigerian singer and songwriter who rose from Lagos street pop to become one of Afrobeats' defining global figures, blending Afrobeats, Afropop, R&B, reggae, and dancehall into a sound that travels easily from local clubs to international charts.
He was born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun in Surulere, Lagos, and grew up in a large, polygamous household. His father, a Muslim with three wives, and his Pentecostal Christian mother created a spiritually mixed home. Wizkid was the only boy among many siblings.
Music entered his life through the church. Raised singing hymns in the choir alongside his cousins, Wizkid found early refuge and inspiration in gospel harmonies. Those church sessions doubled as a creative escape from the busy Surulere neighborhood and planted the seeds for his melodic instincts.
He began recording at 11 years old, first as part of a church-based group called Glorious Five. After briefly performing under the name Lil Prinz, he rebranded as Wizkid, signaling a more confident, street-ready persona. That confidence paid off in 2010 when his breakout single, "Holla at Your Boy," earned him the Next Rated award at The Headies. It set the tone for his debut album, Superstar, which won Best Album of the Year at the 2012 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.
His leap to global recognition came largely through collaborations. Drake's chart-topping "One Dance" introduced Wizkid to a massive international audience and made him the first Nigerian artist to top the Billboard Hot 100. He later earned a Grammy for his contribution to Beyoncé's "Brown Skin Girl," further cementing his place on the world stage.
In 2021, Wizkid made history again when "Essence," featuring Tems, became the first Nigerian song to chart on the US Billboard Hot 100. A subsequent remix with Justin Bieber pushed the track into the Top 10, turning it into a defining crossover moment for Afrobeats.
In January 2026, Wizkid became the first African artist to surpass 10 billion Spotify streams across all credits.
Offstage, Wizkid's image mirrors his music: effortless and aspirational without feeling distant. He blends streetwear with high fashion, often accessorizing with luxury pieces like Van Cleef bracelets, while maintaining a relaxed, approachable cool that's become part of his global appeal.
Although Wizkid is widely known for glossy, feel-good club records, he's spoken openly about a more introspective side. "I know I make a lot of club records but I feel like a pastor, really," he told The Guardian, pointing to the lingering influence of church music and spirituality on his songwriting.
