Songfacts®:

  • "Beautifully Unconventional" was inspired by singer Ellie Roswell and her friend dressing as Christian Slater and Winona Rider's characters from the 1988 dark American comedy Heathers. The lyrics are from the perspective of Christian Slater's character, JD.

Speaking to The Fader Roswell said, "This song is a celebration of all your non-conforming friends. A celebration of individuality and the adventures that come with embracing that."
  • The video finds Ellie Roswell in a Marilyn Monroe-esque dress, hair and makeup as she and her be-suited male band mates perform on a TV stage taken straight from the 1950s. The singer said the vintage look was unrelated to the song. "I just didn't want to have a mullet anymore, seeing as lots of people tore me to pieces in our last video, so it was an excuse to wear a wig!"
