Songfacts®:

  • Working Men's Club is a West Yorkshire post-punk band fronted by singer-songwriter Sydney Minsky-Sargeant. Their music combines elements of industrial sound with a rhythmic, post-punk style that is suitable for dancing, while also incorporating dissonant, mechanical elements.

They recorded this song for their second album, Fear Fear, having been left over from their eponymous debut record. Ross Orton (Arctic Monkeys, MIA, Tricky) produced both albums.
  • An infectious keyboard line creates the foundation for a shimmering, iridescent song about a grieving widow. Minsky-Sargeant wrote the lyrics following a random encounter with a stranger struggling with the death of their partner. "That song, the way it deals with love and loss, it's like a 30-plus-year-old wrote it," Orton told Mojo magazine. "He's not embarrassed at all to explain his s--t in his music - You can hear the darkness. When someone does come forward with a bit of an attitude like that, it's scary."
  • While Working Men's Club self-titled debut album was mostly a personal documentation lyrically, Fear Fear mixes personal experience and an outsider's view of what was going on. "It's kind of therapy, making music, to get something off my chest or chill myself out," said Minsky-Sargeant. "There is a lot more conscious thinking on this album than the last one, and when I'm making a song, I'm not lying. It's genuine for me."
