Songfacts®:

  • This single finds Wretch 32 putting his rapping to one side as he croons lyrics about finding his "treasure in you" over SOS' light drum & bass production.
  • Wretch kicks off the song by admitting he's not a singer:

I can't sing but I wrote you a song, yeah
Wrong notes but the melody's so clear

"Listening to Beenie Man, Bounty Killer and all those guys when I was growing up, I heard them guys rapping and singing and they can't really sing, but it still sounds good because it's in-tune," Wretch told Complex UK. "I wouldn't class them as singers. like I would Whitney Houston or someone, but they have the ability to do that because it's in their range and I knew it was in my ability because I can sing along with them, but I can't sing."

"I always had in my head, 'I'm gonna make a record where there are no rap verses.' And that's what '6 Words' is," he continued. "It's not like everyday rap and I'd say that Gary Barlow and Chris Martin inspired it because, in the studio, all I was thinking was that I needed to write a better song than what they would write."
  • The song was mixed by Wilkinson. The London drum and bass music producer and DJ also worked with Wretch 32 on "Flatline" a track the rapper recorded for his third album.
  • This debuted at #8 on the UK singles chart the same week that "Do They Know It's Christmas?" arrived at #1 on the listing. Wretch 32 had the curious distinction of being the only British act on the Top 10 that week not to feature on the Band Aid charity record.
