Songfacts®:

  • Wynonna Judd's second solo single is about a woman who plans a sweet surprise for her boyfriend, leaving a rose and a love note on his doorstep, only to discover that he's cheating on her when she looks through the window.

The title has both a literal and figurative meaning. The light in the window allows her to witness the betrayal but it also opens her eyes to the harsh reality of her relationship. "They say love is blind," she sings, "but baby not this time."
  • This was written by country singer-songwriter Lisa Angelle and "Thank You for Being a Friend" singer Andrew Gold, and was based on Angelle's experience with an unfaithful boyfriend.

"There was a boyfriend that I had that I pulled up to his house to actually surprise him, and I saw the curtain move, and I saw him lay a big, fat kiss on a beautiful, long, dark-haired girl," she explained in a 2001 interview. "And I got really mad at him, so I went and picked a rose out of his rose garden and put it on his front porch, and I went home and wrote 'I Saw The Light' for Wynonna Judd."
  • This was a #1 hit on the Country chart for three weeks. It was Wynonna's second solo chart-topper, following "She Is His Only Need."
  • Andrew Gold and Lisa Angelle teamed up again when they wrote and produced the tracks for Angelle's self-titled 2000 album.
  • Wynonna sold 5 million copies in the US. Aside from going to #1 on the Country Albums chart, the album peaked at #4 on the genre-spanning Billboard 200 - several notches higher than The Judds ever reached on the tally (the duo's highest-charting entry was at #51 for River Of Time).
