Songfacts®:

  • Jahseh D. Onfroy is a recording artist from Florida who performs under the name of XXXTENTACION (pronounced X-X-X-Tent-aci-ohn.) His music covers several genres, ranging from aggressive rock to hip hop and R&B. Onfoy's raw creative style and the confessional content of his lyrics quickly generated a buzz, but a number of run ins with the law and the resulting incarcerations stifled his career.
  • This song was originally released in 2016, but it gained heat in early 2017 when Drake previewed a song at a concert in Amsterdam that has a similar rap flow.
  • The beat was created by South Florida producers Rojas and Jimmy Duval and was originally made for New Jersey rapper RetcH, when he was in Florida for some shows.

"We never got to send it to RetcH because he went to jail and I lost contact with him and his management," Rojas told Genius.
  • Rojas reached out to Onfoy after seeing him perform a set at a local heavy metal show. "One day me and X were sitting at the crib going through beats and he wasn't really rocking with any of then, and then the last one I showed him was that beat, and he was like, 'Rojas, this is it!'" the beat-maker recalled. "In 15 minutes, it was done. X already knew the whole song in his head before he made it. He's creative as f--k. X decided to distort the whole track in one."
  • The song's beat samples the eerie vocals of UK dubstep pioneer Mala's 2007 song "Changes." The Game previously borrowed from the same source for his "Holy Water" track in 2012.
