Songfacts®:

  • Y2K (birth name Ari Starace) is the LA-based producer Ari Starace, who clocked up his first Hot 100 hit with this Latin-tinged record. The fun-filled tune features vocals by his frequent collaborator, the Canadian rapper bbno$. The pair previously worked together on the tracks "Thankful" and "Stucco" from bbno$'s album Recess.
  • The track was dropped on June 7, 2019. Its release coincided with the date of bbno$'s graduation ceremony from the University of British Columbia.

Got the paper, went to school
Be careful who you callin' a fool

Bbno$ first started breaking out while in university but he decided to stay in school and finish his education. Here's he's stating that even though he's a rapper he's got a degree.
  • The song was the center of a viral marketing campaign by Y2K and bbno$, turning the phrase "Lalala June 7th" into a meme. The pair set up various blogs containing phony origin stories about how the two met and created the track. This provoked anticipation on social media, including on the video app TikTok, where three different snippets of "Lalala" could be viewed.
