Songfacts®:

  • YoungBoy Never Broke Again was locked up in April 2024 on prescription drug fraud charges in Utah, with a tangle of federal gun cases dating back to 2020 shadowing him like bad weather. He was finally released in late March 2025 and received a presidential pardon from Donald Trump on May 28. The paperwork was barely dry before YoungBoy announced his Make America Slime Again tour, a title that somehow manages to be both funny and vaguely threatening, depending on how you read it.

Released on May 2, 2025 as a promotional single, "Shot Callin" was YoungBoy's triumphant return to music following his release from prison.
  • "Shot Callin" is textbook trap/gangsta rap: hard-hitting, defiant, and full of bravado. It's YoungBoy's way of announcing that the boss is back, and he's still very much in charge. He warns opps not to test him, spitting lines like, "This that catch-a-opp-and-hop-out, walk his ass down" and "5.56s lift his chin up." You don't need a degree in semiotics to get the gist.
  • The phrase "Shot Callin" doesn't appear in the lyrics. The title comes from hip-hop slang for being the one who gives the orders: the alpha in the room who doesn't wait for permission.
  • The track opens with the exhaust note of a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, a highly limited Italian supercar with a naturally aspirated V12 engine and an acceleration of 0-60 mph in about 2.5-2.8 seconds. YoungBoy owns one: a burnt-orange SVJ that appears throughout the "Shot Callin" video.
  • The Cheese, Tayo, and TrillGotJuice production samples Gelo's single "Tweaker." The ex-basketball player-turned-musician's distinctive "ah wo woahoooawah" appears as a vocal hook at the beginning of the chorus.
  • Released alongside "Where I Been" as a double single, the track is accompanied by a video co-directed by Nick Belotti and Top. The clip is a victory lap, with YoungBoy flexing cars, cash, and jewelry across a series of Utah gas stations and garages.
  • A few months after it was released, "Shot Callin" found its home on YoungBoy's sprawling 30-track album MASA (released July 25, 2025). The 30-track album has a brighter, more triumphant sound compared to his previous work, reflecting his newfound freedom and optimism following years of legal troubles. The album veers between bouncy Louisiana street rap and power ballads while maintaining the introspective storytelling that has defined much of his catalog.
