Songfacts®:

  • For many of us, "I Love You, Will You Marry Me" was our introduction to the British singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Yungblud (Dominic Harrison). It was released as a single in 2017 when he was 19, a year before he included the song on his debut album, 21st Century Liability. Yungblud first picked up a guitar at age 2 and began writing his own songs at 10. He moved from his native Yorkshire to London to kick-start his career and released this real-life tale of a tragic romance on his self-titled debut EP. The song became his US chart debut, peaking at #26 on Billboard's Alternative Songs. His fanbase developed in Britain, though, where his next three albums all hit #1.
  • The song tells the true story of a man named Jason from Harrison's hometown of Sheffield. In 2001, he proposed to a woman named Clare Middleton by spray painting "I Love You, Will U Marry Me" on Park Hill. Jason was spurned and the graffiti was later used for marketing purposes by a urban regeneration company who wanted to redevelop the area. Clare has since died of cancer, and at the time of the song's release Jason was homeless.
  • Yungblud wrote the song with his producer, Matt Schwartz, who became his main collaborator and a trusted guide. Schwartz is a generation older than Yungblud and offered not just experience, but wisdom to help navigate Yungblud's career as it ebbed and flowed.
