Songfacts®:

  • "Tightrope" is an acoustic-based love song that talks about how love and life are a balancing act. The deeper Zayn plunges into the relationship, the further the fall will be if it all goes wrong. Sometimes the singer feels insecure about committing himself more, but when he feels his grip is going, his lover is still there, holding onto his arm.
  • Zayn wrote the song with its producers:

Ernest Keith Smith, who is best known for his work with country acts like Florida Georgia Line and Morgan Wallen.

Jacob Durrett, who is country singer Devin Dawson's twin brother. His other credits include Morgan Wallen's "Wasted On You."

David Harris, whose other credits include Bridget Kelly's "My Kinda Life."
  • At the end of the song, Zayn interpolates the 1960 single "Chaudhvin Ka Chand" by the Indian singer Mohammed to show his admiration for his lover's beauty. The lyrics are in Urdu - his Pakistani father's native language. They translate as:

Are you the full moon or the sun?
Whatever you are, I swear to God, you are beyond compare

Zayn also sang in Urdu on the 2016 Mind Of Mine track "Intermission: Flower."
  • "Tightrope" is a track from Zayn's third album, Nobody Is Listening. In a statement, the singer said he had "total creative reign" on the record and was "making the music he has always wanted to." He described the album as his most personal project to date.
