  • You know I can't smile without you
    I can't smile without you
    I can't laugh and I can't sing
I'm finding it hard to do anything
You see, I feel sad when you're sad
I feel glad when you're glad
If you only knew what I'm going through
I just can't smile without you

You came along just like a song
    And brighten my day
Who would have believed that you where part of a dream
Now it all seems light years away

And now you know I can't smile without you
    I can't smile without you
    I can't laugh and I can't sing
I'm finding it hard to do anything
You see, I feel sad when you're sad
I feel glad when you're glad
If you only knew what I'm going through
    I just can't smile

Now some people say happiness takes so very long to find
Well, I'm finding it hard leaving your love behind me

And you see I can't smile without you
    I can't smile without you
    I can't laugh and I can't sing
I'm finding it hard to do anything
You see I feel glad when you're glad
I feel sad when you're sad
If you only knew what I'm going through
I just can't smile without you Writer/s: Chris Arnold, David Martin, Geoff Morrow

  • Jennifur Sun from RamonaI have felt this way before , thanks Barry.
  • Deanna from OhI found it. Mickey Rooney he didn't have Downs, he was intellectually disabled, but still, it was a great movie. it looks like it has 2 parts, Bill and Bill on his own?? I didn't know there was a part two.
  • Deanna from OhI have searched all over and I cant figure out the name of the movie.... A reg actor played a downs syndrome man and the only thing I remember is it was an older movie, late 70's maybe and the song... I cant smile without you was in it. I was a kid and it was the first time I heard the song and i used to sing it to my older sister when we were growing up, she has Downs. Does anyone know what the movie title was? The song was so special to me, my mom bought us matching music boxes that played the song. We were always together, best friends. She was 4 years older then me but we grew at the same level. We learned to walk and talk at the same time but then when I was 7-8 I kept reaching milestones and she didn't, it was then that I realized that she was different, but my word for her was special. We still sing this song together. I am 40 and she is 45 but she looks like she is 10. She tells everyone we meet that she is my big sister, and I tell her she is my lil big sister and she laughs like it was the first time she heard me say it. She never ever stops smiling, only when she misplaces her New kids on the block CD, but even then she still smiles. I would love to watch the movie again. Anyone know the name???
  • Barry from Sauquoit, NyOn February 24th 1978, 'The Second Barry Manilow Special' aired on the ABC-TV network...
At the time his "Can't Smile Without You" was at #27 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; and eight weeks later on April 16th, 1978 it peaked at #3* {for 3 weeks} and spent 19 weeks on the Top 100...
And on March 12th, 1978 it reached #1 {for 1 week} on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart; it was also the eighth of his thirteen #1 records on the Adult chart...
    * And before "Can't Smile Without You" peaked at #3 on the Top 100 it was at #4 for three consecutive weeks.
  • Maggie from East Devonport Tas, AustraliaHi Does anyone know did Rod Stewart cover it, I think he would of sang it really well.
  • David from Birmingham, AlThis was one of the better songs on the Carpenters "Kind of a Hush" album, and some in the Carpenters organization wanted to release it as a second single, after the title track. Instead, they released an awful song called "Goofus," which bombed. Meanwhile, Barry Manilow recorded it, released it as a single, and it was huge for him.
  • Paul from Oceanside, Ny"Can't Smile Without You" was the B-side of the Carpenters "Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft" in 1977. Also it would have been Barry's 4th #1 in the U.S. but two songs from Saturday Night Fever were #1 & #2. "Night Fever" by the Bee Gee's and "If I Can't Have You" by Yvonne Elliman.
  • Will from Lancaster, United Kingdomit was used in hellboy 2
  • Eric from Maastrichtthis is a truly horrible song!
    yuch!
  • Elizabeth from Sao Paulo, BrazilOn Manilow's box set, David Martin, one of the composers of the song, says:
"In 1975, my wife Debbie was working at a greeting card store. One evening, she gave me a card... Across the top of the card were simply the word 'Can't Smile Without You'.
I was immediately drawn to the slogan and during the drive home from Hampstead to Harrow, a journey of about 30 minutes, the song was written."
  • Wolfgang from Berlin, GermanyIt first appeared on the Carpenter's album "A Kind of Hush" in 1976.
  • Sean from Toronto, CanadaThis song was used during the opening credits of the movie "Starsky & Hutch" with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson.
  • Alan from East Kilbride, ScotlandSorry to disappoint you but surely The Carpenters recorded the original version?
  • Paty from Mexico, city, Mexicothis song is a sweet
