  • Last night I waved goodbye
    Now it seems years
    I'm back in the city
    Where nothing is clear
But thoughts of me holding you
    Bringing us near

And tell me, when will our eyes meet?
    When can I touch you?
When will this strong yearning end?
And when will I hold you again

    Time in New England
    Took me away
    To long rocky beaches
    And you by the bay
    We started a story
    Whose end must now wait

And tell me, when will our eyes meet?
    When can I touch you?
When will this strong yearning end?
And when will I hold you again

    I feel the change comin'
    I feel the wind blow
    I feel brave and daring
    I feel my blood flow
With you I could bring out
All the love that I have
    With you there's a heaven
    So earth ain't so bad

And tell me, when will our eyes meet?
    When can I touch you?
When will this strong yearning end?
And when will I hold you
    Again

  • Valerie J from Laguna Hills, Ca, UsaI did not really get into this song when it was released, but heard it recently and it had a special meaning for me. Notice there are no names or pronouns in it, only "you". The person the narrator is missing could be a man or a woman. I don't remember exactly when Barry Manilow came out as gay, but certainly when the song came out in 1976 he still was not out. Younger people might not realize how much pressure LGBT people faced to remain closeted at that time, especially celebrities. I'd like to think this song might have been a subtle nod by Manilow to his fellow LGBT fans. Everything in the song fits the narrative, including the idea of going somewhere (New England) away from where one person in the couple works and is frequently recognized (New York) in order to get to know a new love and feel free to be onesself. (Reba McIntyre's "response" song notwithstanding, the tone and lyrics of Manilow's song don't sound like one in which the narrator is having an extramarital affair.) The lyric "I feel bold and daring" especially reinforces the idea of someone finally starting to feel free enough to be himself and experience a love that was largely forbidden at the time. Great song!
  • Janet Sep from Springhouse PaOne of his best songs ever. It's still being played today, but by alot of older people I know that a lot of the younger generation thatI know loves the song. and ask me it is. When I yell them, they have no idea who he is. But they love the music.
