  • I need your arms around me
I need to feel your touch
    I need your understanding
I need your love so much

You tell me that you love me so
You tell me that you care
But when I need you (baby)
    Baby, you're never there

    On the phone
    Long, long distance
    Always through such strong resistance
First you say you're too busy
I wonder if you even miss me

    Never there
    You're never there
You're never ever ever ever there

A golden bird that flies away
    A candle's fickle flame
To think I held you yesterday
Your love was just a game

A golden bird that flies away
    A candle's fickle flame
To think I held you yesterday
Your love was just a game

You tell me that you love me so
You tell me that you care
But when I need you (baby)
    Baby

Take the time to get to know me
If you want me why can't you just show me
Well, always on this roller coaster
If you want me why can't you get closer

    Never there
    You're never there
You're never ever ever ever there
    Never there
    You're never there
You're never ever ever ever there Writer/s: JOHN MCCREA

  • Fate from Montreal, CanadaThis song is as much about long distance relationships as it is about one-sided relationships. Physically, she is never there, but emotionally she is even less present. He can talk to her "On the phone, long, long distance/Always with great resistance", which is unsatisfying, possibly because it's so difficult to get her on the phone, but on a deeper level, maybe she isn't actually listening to what he has to say. I've always felt that physical distance isn't the real barrier. It's a metaphor for every relationship where one partner is less committed, leaving the singer wondering "If you even miss me". It's popular not because it's an awesome song, but because the experience of loving someone who doesn't reciprocate any more, if (s)he, ever did, is universal.
