  • Such a feelin's comin' over me
There is wonder in 'most every thing I see
Not a cloud in the sky, got the sun in my eyes
    And I won't be surprised if it's a dream

Everything I want the world to be
Is now comin' true especially for me
And the reason is clear, it's because you are here
You're the nearest thing to heaven that I've seen

I'm on the top of the world lookin' down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I've found ever since you've been around
Your love's put me at the top of the world

Somethin' in the wind has learned my name
And it's tellin' me that things are not the same
In the leaves on the trees and the touch of the breeze
There's a pleasin' sense of happiness for me

There is only one wish on my mind
When this day is through I hope that I will find
That tomorrow will be just the same for you and me
All I need will be mine if you are here

I'm on the top of the world lookin' down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I've found ever since you've been around
Your love's put me at the top of the world

I'm on the top of the world lookin' down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I've found ever since you've been around
Your love's put me at the top of the world Writer/s: John Bettis, Richard Lynn Carpenter

  • Doug from AucklandThe lyrics to this song originated as a poem penned by a woman from Tuatapere NZ, as I understand it in the 1950's or 60's, after walking the Humpridge Track and viewing the world from the Tors above what is now the Okaka Lodge. The view from the Tors is other-worldly and literally, you are looking down on creation.
  • Joseph from Los Angeles, CaSomeone once said the song was intended as a religious song. That the singer is talking to God, and believes that God's love has made her a spiritual person who is above being brought down by the physical world. I don't know if that was the intention of the writer or not.

  • Ken from Pensacola Beach, FlGreat song, performed by the greatest songstress to appear in my lifetime. No one has ever rivaled Karen.
  • Larry from Coral Springs, FlI love this song..it has a "happy go lucky person" personality to it
  • Tammy from Nashville, TnJohn Bettis actally made that comment about being on "top of the world" to Karen. I saw the interview and he was talking to Karen.
  • Steven from Sunnyvale, CaBob Rivers made a hilarious parody titled "Antidepressants", refering to Karen's battle with depression. You can't find it on his web site, but I found it at http://blog.virtualdominion.net/post/330
  • Roy from Mesa, AzThe song makes you happy! You never get sick of it. It's a real love song. It's a song I would sing to my wife.
  • Kenneth from Cleveland, OhJohn Bettis was on a plane sitting next to Richard Carpenter looking down at Carpenters fans waving and screaming,he leaned over to Richard and said"you're on top of the world now, huh? The song was hatched!
  • Matt from Charleston, ScThis song was covered on a Carpenters tribute album by Shonen Knife, a Japanase girl-powered punk band! They played it in a choppy, jangly fashion. The vocals are almost cartoonish Japanese stereotype. In the chorus they say "Onna toppa da word. Onna toppa da Word!" Still, I think its a rockin version.
  • Adele from Victoria, CanadaA great song! Phoebe, Monica, and Joey sang this in the episode of Friends in the first season where there is a huge blackout.
  • Gerald from Stockton, CaA very happy song.
