  • Some people watch
    Some people pray
But even lights can fade away
    Some people hope
    Some people pay
But why'd we have to stay
    'Cause even heroes
    Get the blues
    Or any misery you choose
    You like to watch
    We like to use
And we were born to lose

    I choose defeat
    I walk away
    And leave this place
    The same today
    Some like to sleep
    We like to play
Just look at all that pain

    You want the heart
    Or to be saved
But even good guys still get paid
    So watch my back
    And keep the blade
I think it got you laid
    So fake your death
    Or it's your blame
And leave the lights on when you stay
    Take off your clothes
    And dream that fame
Come on and feel that shame

    I choose defeat
    I walk away
    And leave this place
    The same today
    Some like to sleep
    We like to play
Just look at all that pain

Just look at all that pain
Just look at all that pain
Just look at all that pain
Just give me all that pain
Just give me all that pain
Just give me all that pain

    I choose defeat
    I walk away
    And leave this place
    The same today
    Some like to sleep
    We like to play
Just look at all that pain Writer/s: FRANK IERO, GERARD WAY, JAMES DEWEES, MICHAEL WAY, RAYMOND TORO, ROBERT C BRYAR

  • Queen Diana from UsaInteresting question from Kid.

It could mean nothing, rhyme... but let's pretend it has some deep meaning.

Maybe it's a reference to the story of the Emperor's New Clothes, who was so obsessed with fame and vanity that when he got his newest most expensive and prestigious garment from two swindlers. They tell him that the garment is supposed to be invisible to those who are too stupid and incompetent. So as not to appear a fool, the Emperor pretended he could see the garment and "put it on", walking around town naked. The town's people go along with it until a child points out that he in fact has no clothes on at all. The Emperor goes on walking around more proud than ever even though they were all made to be fools. The meaning of this tale is argued.... some say it is symbolic of the way we attempt to clothe our fears and how ineffective this is.

This could also be a reference to the Garden of Eden and how Adam and Eve are naked until the eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and realize they are naked, feel shame, and then clothe themselves. God throws them out for this. But, God also says that the two trees in the garden (that one, as well as the Tree of Life -- immortality) are characteristics that make humans like God. So, this is all part of growth journey for human consciousness. This experience of self-awareness, leading to shame, and the journey to them once again strip ourselves of these fears, these garments, and even embrace that shame, not be controlled by it.

Anyways, "come on and feel that shame" is also part of this verse: "take off your clothes and dream that fame, come on and feel that shame". So, maybe they are referring to stripping ourselves of the masks, the garments we use to hide our fears, to feel that shame: to be ourselves, to be authentic, to embrace fully who we are even that which we are ashamed of.

"Dream that fame" is interesting here. An unapologetic head first diving into our most unimaginable pursuits and dreams?

Or, maybe this verse is saying that with the stripping of the self in pursuit of fame you may come to find shame in yourself?

I don't really know. What do you think? How does it make you feel?
  • Kid From YesterdayQuestion about this song... what's the meaning of the lyrics "take off your clothes and dream about that fame"?
  • Joshua from CanadaYes, I agree with queen Diana. This song changed my life.
  • Diana from Lake Zurich, IlI believe this song was written with a message in mind; Gerard and the band wanted to end MCR on a good note. Meaning, they did not want to keep playing until the band died or the fans gave up on them or anything tragic. They wanted to end on a high note, at a good time so they can be remembered well. The lyrics convey this message.
"Some people watch, some people pray, but even lights can fade away."- No matter how badly the fans believe, a band will eventually die, their fame, their glory, their message, their honesty; whatever it is that makes that band who they are.
"'Cause even heroes get the blues, or any misery you choose."- Nobody is perfect. They are just like everyone else. And they are not indestructable. They go through tough times, deal with depression, and many struggles in their lives. Just like Gerard and his past struggle with drugs, alcohol, and depression--which he amazingly overcame. Much respect.
"I choose defeat, I walk away, and leave this place for sane today."- Again, reiterating their choice to end the band at the time they did.
"Just look at all that pain."- I'm not 100% sure, but I believe it is not only referring to the pain of the fans at finding out their favorite band is ending, but also to the pain of other fans of bands that ended at a bad time and now have a bad reputation or memory of them.
"You want the heart, or to be saved. But even good guys still get paid."- Talking to their fans, MCR is again saying they are not perfect and although they have helped their fans and vice versa, they won't always be able to. Telling their fans to keep in mind that even they still got paid to play their music.
"So fake your death, or its your blame. And leave the lights on when you stay."- Again, talking about why they ended the band. Didn't want to be blamed if they kept going and it went downhill from their. Leave the lights--good memories--on, rather than have them fade or be covered by bad.

MCR wrote this song with a clear message in mind. Though it may be blunt--down to every word in the lyrics--it still expresses their sadness at having to leave. They have their own lives to live and their own families to take care of, and now they are passing the torch to us, their fans. "Your memory will live on without you"- Danger Days. R.I.P. My chemical Romance. Thank you for all the music you have made, all the art you have created; all the souls you saved, all the minds you have awakened; thank you for believing in us and inspiring us to live on and make our lives our OWN. <3 Much love and with great sadness- Diana.
