  • Stay for just a while
Stay, and let me look at you
It's been so long, I hardly knew you
    Standing in the door
    Stay with me a while
I only want to talk to you
We've traveled halfway 'round the world
    To find ourselves again

    September morn
We danced until the night became a brand new day
Two lovers playing scenes from some romantic play
September morning still can make me feel that way

    Look at what you've done
    Why, you've become a grown-up girl
I still can hear you crying
In a corner of your room
And look how far we've come
So far from where we used to be
But not so far that we've forgotten
    How it was before

    September morn
Do you remember how we danced that night away
Two lovers playing scenes from some romantic play
September morning still can make me feel that way Writer/s: Gilbert Francois Leopold Becaud, Neil Diamond

  • Rob from Las VegasOne doesn't have to be a rocket scientist to understand the meaning of the song.
Whomever commented that it's about a father and daughter reuniting after being separated for quite a while is out of their mind(s).
Otherwise how would you explain this verse:
"September Morn, we danced until the night became a brand new day. Two LOVERS playing scenes from some romantic play...."
Nope. Doesn't sound like a father and daughter to me.
Like most people think and the way Neil Diamond wrote it,
the song is plainly about a couple seeing one another after being separated for some length of time.
  • Nerleman from Hickory, NcWhen this song was a hit in 1979, the big FM top 40 station in Hickory, NC at the time (95.7 WXRC) played an oddly edited/remixed version of this song. The instrumental piano intro was trimmed off so that the song started immediately with Neil's vocals. Also, the key change occurred at the end of the second verse; the second chorus and the instrumental bridge were edited out. This made the song barely 3 minutes long. I've never heard this version played anywhere else. At the time, WXRC used TM Communications' "Stereo Rock" reel-to-reel tapes. So I am thinking this particular mix was made specifically for TM.

  • Roy From IrelandA father estranged from his daughter who cried in the corner of her room when the father and mother split. Mother and daughter moved far away. Father and daughter decided to meet after so many years. He remembers dancing with her when she was a little girl.
  • Stevo from Pa.Not about lovers or a couple. "I Still can hear you crying in the corner of your room". It's about a daughter or a youngster that he was close to.

  • Emily from GeorgiaOne of my FAVORITE Neil Diamond songs. Heard it later in life (48) but, grew up with Neil and others from that time (nee’ 1971) My parents immigrated from Zimbabwe (since deceased: Mom-1995-car accident; Dad-2000-heart attack; Brother-2000-questionable) We we’re only here in the US (I was the only one born here) because my Dad was 1 of 50 chosen for a quarter to tour the US.Music was our life (my daughter is a singer/songwriter. Only recently have I finally been able to listen to and remember things from my childhood. Thank you Neil...
