  • I've been downhearted, baby
I've been down, I've been down hearted, baby
Ever since the day we met, ever since the day we met
    I've been downhearted, baby
I've been down, I've been down hearted, baby
Ever since the day we met, ever since the day we met

Jan lays down and wrestles in her sleep
    Moonlight spills on comic books
    And superstars in magazines
An old friend calls and tells us where to meet
Her plane takes off from Baltimore
And touches down on Bourbon Street

We sit outside and argue all night long
About a God we've never seen
But never fails to side with me
Sunday comes and all the papers say
    Ma Teresa's joined the mob
And happy with her full time job

    Do-do-do, do-do-do
    Do-do-do, do-do-do
    Do-do-do, do-do-do
    Do-do-do, do-do-do
    Do-do-do, do-do-do
    Do-do-do, do-do-do
    Do-do-do, do-do-do
    Do-do-do, do-do-do

    I've been downhearted, baby
I've been down, I've been down hearted, baby
Ever since the day we met, ever since the day we met
    I've been downhearted, baby
I've been down, I've been down hearted, baby
Ever since the day we met, ever since the day we met

Am I alive or thoughts that drift away?
    Does summer come for everyone?
Can humans do what prophets say?
If I die before I learn to speak
Can money pay for all the days I lived awake
    But half asleep?

    Do-do-do, do-do-do
    Do-do-do, do-do-do
    Do-do-do, do-do-do
    Do-do-do, do-do-do

A life is time, they teach you growing up
The seconds ticking killed us all
A million years before the fall
You ride the waves and don't ask where they go
You swim like lions through the crest
And bathe yourself on zebra flesh

    Do-do-do, do-do-do
    Do-do-do, do-do-do
    Do-do-do, do-do-do
    Do-do-do, do-do-do
    Do-do-do, do-do-do
    Do-do-do, do-do-do
    Do-do-do, do-do-do
    Do-do-do, do-do-do

    I've been downhearted, baby
    I've been downhearted, baby
Ever since the day we met
Ever since the day we met

    I've been downhearted, baby
I've been down, I've been down hearted, baby
Ever since the day we met, ever since the day we met
    I've been downhearted, baby
I've been down, I've been down hearted, baby
Ever since the day we met, ever since the day we met

    I've been downhearted, baby
I've been down, I've been down hearted, baby
Ever since the day we met, ever since the day we met
    I've been downhearted, baby
I've been down, I've been down hearted, baby
Ever since the day we met, ever since the day we met

    I've been downhearted, baby
I've been down, I've been down hearted, baby
Ever since the day we met, ever since the day we met
    I've been downhearted, baby
I've been down, I've been down hearted, baby
Ever since the day we met, ever since the day we met

    I've been downhearted, baby
I've been down, I've been down hearted, baby

  • Polobabies from AlbertaGreat song, has that rare ability to take you back in time to when you first heard it. A true piece of sonic art.
  • Jim from Lombard, IlA true one-hit wonder. It came out of nowhere and the artist faded almost as quickly. I was 20-something in 1996, and I can tell you that this song was EVERYWHERE that summer regardless of where it charted. That spacey, wandering beat coupled with a cool use of sample from BB King was pretty unique, but I agree it's the hook that sells it. I haven't been able to get that song out of my head for 25 years. It's a top-ten song of the 90's for me. Would love to know whatever became of him and if he ever tried music again. Someone who can produce something this brilliant has to have some more in him.
  • Alex from SeattleThe melody of the verse is similar to Bruce Cockburn's "How I Spent My Fall Vacation" from his 1980 album Rumours. One interesting thing about the lyrics is that they refer three or four times to religious themes: the singer and companion(s) argue about God; Mother Teresa is mentioned as having joined the mob; and he refers to a time "a million years before the fall", the "fall" possibly referring to the Christian idea of man's fall from grace caused by Adam and Eve eating the forbidden fruit. Finally the line "can humans do what prophets say" may be referring to religious prophets such as are found in many different religions.
