  • Ever seen a blind man cross the road
Tryin' to reach the other side
Ever seen a young girl growing old
Tryin' to make herself a bride
So what becomes of you my love
When they have finally stripped you of
The handbags and the glad rags
That your poor old granddad had to sweat to buy you

Once I was a young man
And all I thought I had to do was smile
You are still a young girl
And you bought everything in style
But once you think you're in, you're out
But that don't mean a single thing without
The handbags and the glad rags
That your poor old granddad had to sweat to buy you

Sing a song of six-pence for your sake
About a bottle full of rye
Four and twenty blackbirds in a cake
Bake them all in a pie
They told me you missed school today
So what I suggest, you just throw them all away
The handbags and the glad rags
That your poor old granddad had to sweat to buy you
    Oh yeah

They told me you missed school today
So what I suggest, you just throw them all away
The handbags and the glad rags
That your poor old granddad had to sweat to buy you Writer/s: Michael D'abo

  • AnonymousA Bill Chase reunion band played this song very impressively in 2007 at the Minnesota Music Cafe in St. Paul. "Chase Revisited." It is on YouTube and I suggest you all play it. On the same night as the concert, the bridge fell into the river, remember? I was at the concert and the bridge incident was actually not a distraction. Overhead TV screens allowed us to follow what happened but we couldn't hear anything because of the music! The song itself reflects tremendous artistry.
  • Barry from Sauquoit, NyOn September 5th 1971, "Handbags and Gladrags" by Chase entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #95; and on September 26th, 1971 it peaked at #84 {for 2 weeks} and spent 5 weeks on the Top 100...
The band had two other Top 100 records; "Get It On" {peaked at #24 in 1971} and "So Many People" {reached #81 1972}...
Sadly, leader Bill Chase and band members Wally Yohn, Walter Clark, and John Emma died in a plane crash on August 9th, 1974...
    May all four R.I.P.
