  • Whatsoever I've feared has come to life
And whatsoever I've fought off became my life
Just when everyday seemed to greet me with a smile
Sunspots have faded, now I'm doing time
    Now I'm doing time

'Cause I fell on black days
    I fell on black days

Whomsoever I've cured, I've sickened now
And whomsoever I've cradled, I've put you down
I'm a search light soul they say
But I can't see it in the night

I'm only faking when I get it right
    When I get it right

'Cause I fell on black days
    I fell on black days

    How would I know
That this could be my fate?
    How would I know
That this could be my fate? Yeah

    Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
    Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
    Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh

So what you wanted to see good
    Has made you blind
And what you wanted to be yours
    Has made it mine

So don't you lock up something
That you wanted to see fly
    Hands are for shaking
No, not tying, no, not tying

    I sure don't mind a change
    I sure don't mind a change
Yeah, I sure don't mind, sure don't mind a change
    I sure don't mind a change

'Cause I fell on black days
    I fell on black days

    How would I know
That this could be my fate?
    How would I know
That this could be my fate?

    How would I know
That this could be my fate?
    How would I know
That this could be my fate?

    I sure don't mind a change Writer/s: Chris Cornell

  • Glasscat from Dallas, TxMy husband just turned me onto Audioslave like a stone. I am over 60 listening to all different genres of music, I had heard of Soundgarden but not their music. How sad for the young man and a loss for his family. I haven't been moved by a song in quite some time, the beat is catchy and his voice is smooth as velvet and his lyrics brought tears to my eyes. I'm a new fan of his RIP
  • Numetaldada from Massachusetts So I can’t help but notice the lyrics “How would I know
That this could be my fate?
    How would I know
That this could be my fate?
    How would I know
That this could be my fate?
    How would I know
That this could be my fate?
    I sure don't mind a change”

With the vagueness of his death and what appears to be fowl play. Man I know I sound like a conspiracy nut. Or maybe that’s how long he was fighting not trying to end his life. Him and Chester passing both scream fool play. Maybe I am still in denial . RIP legends.
  • Dana Parks from Jacksonville, FlThere's a lot of different songs that make me feel this way right now, but I think this one hits it on the nose because I've been trying to rekindle the relationship between my son and myself, who has basically written me off. I let him down in the past, and now I'm with a different woman not his mother, but I'm trying to make it, and make it better this time around however, because my son doesn't want to give me a second chance, I feel like I'm falling on black days.
  • Daniel from Indianapolis, InStill sad about Chris.
  • Drew from Sville, TxThis song is clear that all will go thru black days at some point in their lives. The last part of the song is where the meaning comes out, you will find inner soul and it will be better, with the "sure don't mind a change". The deepness of this song is quite beyond any peers.
  • Elmer H from Westville, Ok"Fell On Black Days" is still one of my favorite songs. When I first heard it on the radio, I was beginning college and I loved the song (and others by Soundgarden). I was so imressed by Chris Cornell's vocal power and expressionism. What a voice! A few years ago, Soundgarden split up, which saddened me. Now, I hear they've reunited and are prepping for a tour in early 2014. Wonderful!
  • Paul from Croydon, PaWow, just had to chime in on this great song. Cornell is superb on his range and delivery. The driving riff, the punctual drumming, the hypnotic bass (love the mid-song octave drop) makes the whole song feel, well, um - BLACK. Thanx, Kevin from UT for the info. Not sure how you know this, but the explanation makes perfect sense. Depression can be so evil on a person; like one doesn't have enough crap going on in their teen years, especially. I'm not a super-faithful fan of Soundgarden, but this song really does something to me and for me that borders on the mystical and magical. I consider Soundgarden to be a cross between grunge and metal; a little something from each, I think. Does anybody know the REAL lyric, because I've seen it published both ways: "Search my soul, they say" vs. "Searchlight soul they say"... anybody got a clue? Thanx ! Peace!
  • Wess from Moorhead, Mnlove this song ........
  • Jeany from Whittier, CaMatt, if you are 21, you were 1 year old when Louder Than Love came out so I wouldn't expect you to remember it being popular (partially because it wasn't and because you were a year old).
Their break through album was Superunknown, which came out in 1994, you would have been about 6 years old.

In fact, I don't even know why I'm arguing with you. You are too young to have even been a part of that scene. Really it's kind of funny. Cute that you act like you know something about it though.
  • Robert from Redding, Ca, CaFirst of all, that ENTIRE Seattle scene in the early 90's was amazing. Second of all, Soundgarden HATED being called a grunge band if anything they considered themselves a metal band. Third of all Pearl Jam hated being so popular, why do you think they stopped making videos (also because so may thought Jeremy was controversial and they didn't want to deal with it). Cornell is amazing. This whole BS about selling out and being popular...you all should be ashamed, MUSIC UNHEARD IS LIKE ART UNSEEN!!!
  • Kayla from Oklahoma City, Ok--Matt: Don't forget Alice in Chains.
Anyways, this song is very expressive. One of Soundgarden's best songs, besides Pretty Noose, Black Hole Sun, and Outshined.
  • Matt from Houston, Txjeany,I'm 21. by the time they were a commercial success, they had produced one more album after that. I don't seem to recall all that airplay when they relesead ultramega ok or louder than love. some on badmotorfinger but still. and sorry bout the misinterpretation. back to jeany, don't tell me about the poster boys of grunge. the way I see it, mudhoney, screaming trees, green river and soundgarden were the big four of grunge
  • Jeany from Whittier, CaSoundgarden was an awesome band, they were definitely one of my favorite bands of the 90s but I find some of these comments to be funny . Maybe some of you are too young to remember when Soundgarden first became popular? Matt, Soundgarden was a popular band and was pretty successful in the 90s, are you too young to remember when Spoonman and Blackholesun came out or their other songs that were played repeatedly on radio and MTV? I don't see Sunshine's remark about lack of comments as in any way implying that she wants Soundgarden to be a commercial popular band, just shock that such a popular band had no comments. As far as being under the shadow of other bands . . . Eddie Veddar and Kurt Cobain are the ones who made this style of music popular and most of you probably wouldn't even know who Soundgarden was if it had not been for them. Soundgarden was around before Nirvana and Pearl Jam, they were the first band of the style to sign to a major label, but you only heard them because Nirvana and PJ made the style popular.
  • Sunshine from Houston, TxMatt I wasn't implying that they needed to be commercially successful (most of my favorite artists aren't and are not listed on this site).
I was stating the were one of the best rock groups in their era. The fact that they have songs here with no comments just seemed a little odd.
    It seems we like 'em in Houston. ;}
  • Matt from Houston, TxSure soundgarden is underated but if they were a commercial success, it would be like all these kidssaying they like them even though they only know like one of their song. simply said, you just implied you want them to be a popular band which would overshadow thier integrity and meaning like nirvana or pearl jam.
  • Jeffrey from Petersburg, InThis song is awesome! the whole cd is its great! the are way underated.
  • Ammon from Houston, Tx@Sunshine: Sadly, Soundgarden is underrated. A shame that many of the best bands ever get cast under the shadow of more popular bands that never should have been coughnirvanacough.
  • Kevin from Seattle, WaLove the line "Jesus tried to crack a smile, beneath another shovel-load".
  • Sunshine from Houston, TxSoundgarden was one of the best rock groups in the 90's where are their comments?
