• Annabelle from Eugene, OrI met Taylor Dayne at a concert, which my father and stepmother took me to see in Las Vegas in 2001. We met backstage in The Station, a small theater, where my Dad, Stepmom and I sat in the front row, and Taylor was literally a few feet away. I asked her about this song when she pulled me aside in the theater's lobby, to make a sweet comment on my singing voice. When I told her about how the song linked to a situation that recently happened in my life at home, Taylor told me the story of how the idea for the song originally came together. She even said to me that she knew Diane Warren, and that "Love Will Lead You Back" was actually a collaborative effort between her and Diane.
  
  The idea for the song originally came from part of a farewell note that Taylor Dayne had written to her husband in 1988. As her debut album, Tell It To My Heart was making its way up the charts, Dayne had experienced some painful emotions when she and her husband separated in mid-1988. The cause of their separation was due to false accusations that Taylor had been messing around with another man. However, the tables had turned, when in fact, Taylor caught her husband in bed with another woman! As Taylor sat down and wrote a long farewell note to her husband, she included what would eventually become the lyrics to this bittersweet ballad of sadness and heartache. Taylor's poignant note tells her husband that saying goodbye is always the hardest thing to do, but in her heart, there's always hope that he'll tell her he misses her, and that one day he'll soon return home. Taylor was then taken to the house of Diane Warren, a songwriter from Los Angeles, who was staying in her vacation home, a beachhouse in New York City, before going on her way to Russia for the summer. As Diane sat down with Taylor, she, too, was saddened by these words, saying that she could feel Taylor's pain. Diane then sat down at the piano in her house, carefully reading Taylor's letter, and, although she admitted to Dayne that she had never been in love, let alone never been married, she agreed to perfect Taylor's idea into a suitable piece of music. Diane wrote down a perfected version, although not exactly verbatim, of the words that Taylor wrote, and, within a few short hours, she composed a beautiful but sad melody for the song that would later become Taylor's only #1 hit. However, the first run was not as good as the girls expected. The melody of this song was originally in the key of A-Flat Minor and E-Flat Major. When Taylor tried to match her voice with the recording, she looked over and said, 'Diane, this is pretty good, only there's something wrong with this picture. This song is too low for my voice range, since I have a higher voice, and a limited vocal range. I was wondering if you could please bring it up a couple of notches for me.' It was soon arranged, Diane made a new version, this time changing the key from A-Flat Minor and E-Flat Major, to D-Flat Minor and A-Flat Major. It is the D-Flat Minor and A-Flat Major keyed version that became the finished result of this song.
  
  Diane Warren originally had Whitney Houston in mind to sing this song, but then she realized that the feelings came straight from Taylor's heart, so Dayne's version was the original recording of this song.
