  • Stop, you better save me
Stop, stop, stop, you better save me, dear

When we played tag in grade school
    You wanted to be it
But chasin' boys was just a fad
You crossed your heart you'd quit
When we grew up you traded
    Your promise for my ring
Now just like back in grade school
You're doing the same old thing

Stop, the love you save may be your own
Darlin' take it slow or someday you'll be all alone
Better stop, the love you save may be your own
Darlin' look both ways before you cross me
You're heading for a danger zone

I'm the one who loves you
    I'm the one you need
Those other guys will put you down
    As soon as they succeed
    They'll ruin your reputation
    They'll label you a flirt
The way they talk about you
They'll turn your name to dirt
    Oh

    Isaac said he kissed you
    Beneath the apple tree
    When Benjie held your hand
    He felt electricity
    When Alexander called you
He said he rang your chimes
    Christopher discovered
    You're way ahead your time

Stop, the love you save may be your own
Darlin' take it slow or someday you'll be all alone
Better stop, the love you save may be your own
Darlin' look both ways before you cross me
You're heading for a danger zone

    Hold on Hold on
    Hold on Hold on
    "S" is for save it
"T" is for take it slow
    "O" is for oh no
    "P" is for please
    Please don't go

The love you save may be your own
Some day you may be all alone
    Stop it
    Save it, baby
    You better stop
The love you save may be your own
    Please, please
Or some day, some day, baby
    You'll be all alone
I'm the one who loves you
    I'm the one you need
Those other guys will put you down
    As soon as they succeed

Stop the love you save may be your own
You better stop it, stop it, girl
Or someday you'll be all alone

The way they talk about you
    They'll turn your name
    Turn your name to dirt

Stop the love you save may be your own,
Don't you know, don't you know stop baby you'll be all alone
Those other guys will put you down
As soon as they succeed Writer/s: Alphonso Mizell, Berry Gordy Jr, Deke Richards, Freddie Perren

  • Vivian from PrIsaac and Benjy refer to Newton and Franklin.
  • Queeny from Las Vegas, NevadaIt’s Christopher Columbus as he was known at the time to have “discovered” America. Cute little song! I’m glad to finally know the lyrics, but what does “the love you save may be your own” mean? I still don’t get that.
  • Lenny from Long IslandIt must have been about 20 years ago when I realized the lyrics. Of course it's Christopher Columbus. Christopher Polhem? Are you kidding me? Those lyrics were from basic history in the USA. Just like ABC is easy as 123.
  • Barry from Sauquoit, NyOn May 10th 1970, the Jackson 5 performed "The Love You Save" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'...
Two weeks later on May 24th, 1970 the song would enter Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #45; four weeks later on June 21st, 1970 it peaked at #1* {for 2 weeks} and spent 13 weeks on the Top 100...
    And on June 14th, 1970 it also reached #1 {for 6 weeks} on Billboard's R&B Singles chart...
    * "The Love You Save" had the distinction of bumping the Beatles' 20th and final #1 record out of the top spot on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart.
  • Kenneth from Cleveland, OhThis song is great. It also has a very serious message if you listen closely to it.
  • Punkanelly from Lake Charles, LaNo, Christopher is without a doubt meant to refer to Christopher Columbus. Isaac Newton, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Graham Bell are all very very famous and widely taught to kids in grade-school, so in keeping with that tradition, Christopher can only mean Columbus. Why would the writers put in all these famous names and then add the name of a Christopher Polhem who is virtually unknown in comparison to the others.
  • Fyodor from Denver, CoPowerful opening!! As a kid I despised their first two songs, but liked this one enough to buy it!
  • Billy from Pittsburgh, PaI think it's Columbus...since he "discovered" America.
  • Germaine from Melbourne, AustraliaA cute and interesting fact about some of the lyrics in this song. It says "When Isaac tried to kiss you beneath the apple tree, when Benji held your head he felt electricity, when alexander called you he said he rang your chime, Christopher discovered you're way ahead of your time." Isacc is Isacc Newton who obviously theorised gravity after he saw an apple fall from a tree, Benji is Benjimen Franklin who discovered lightning is electricity, Alex is Alexander Ghrahem Bell who invented the telephone... and Christpher... I heard it was meant to be Christopher Columbus, but i couldn't see how that made sense with the lyrics so I did a bit of research. I think it could be Christopher Polhem who was a famous swedish scientist who was one of the first people ever to manufacture affordable, good quality clocks in the mid 1700s. He was also the inventor of the modern padlock. What a dude!
  • Maddie from Yakima, WaMy favorite Jackson 5 song.
