• Bluecat from Promised LandThis song to me feels like inner conflict that wants to be reconciled to feel liberated - rebelliousness, wanting to break free from convention. Good girl here might just represent conventional life and judgement on living differently more freely, authentically. If you think about it the feminine aspect in us that is actually the free flowing, creative aspect and the masculine aspect that gives its shape and structure (and safety). However the song also warns that freedom without purpose and values can lead you down to shadow routes such as aimlessness, carelessness, lack of compassion and parasitism.
  He wants to be free of societal expectations, that's what he really wants to be free of, so he can make his choices free from those projections. Free falling is complete surrender and trust in himself that is what he wants and really yearns for even if his choices will hurt others, he is the authority of his own life. He can't stay with someone he doesn't even miss? Do you think he should? So he doesn't break her heart? I wouldn't want someone stay with me because he just worries how the breakup will affect me, I'd want someone to stay with me because he knows it in his whole being that I am the one for him.
• Steven Farley from OregonGator Rogowski, one of the skaters in that video, a pro skater for Vision Streetwear, subsequently murdered a friend of his ex-girlfriend. Sentenced to 31 years in 1992, he was granted parole twice, and twice has had that parole overturned by California Gov. Gavin Newsome, once in April of 2020 and more recently in Nov. of 2022.

This song is also about vampires jogging in the Valley, and the poor street lighting on Ventura Blvd. The young guy knows he's in big trouble, so he flies an airplane over the Hollywood Hills, then instead of skywriting his girlfriend's name, he instead jumps out of the plane, and sings the refrain all the way down. "For a while" is what young guys think eternity is.

• Robert from Johns Creek, GaI've been practicing vocals and guitar on this song for a while. My take on the meaning is this... The singer had it made with a beautiful lady who had everything he could possibly need. But he was enticed by the "glamour" of the vampires and bad boys who prey on innocent girls. So he dropped his girlfriend and (supposedly) didn't even miss her. He was "free fallin" [falling from grace]. He has fallen into the pit of despair with the other "bad boys," standing in the shadows. The unspoken message is that he is full of regret. He now wishes he could "leave this world for a while" to reevaluate his poor choices.

I listen mostly to live performances and I never knew that Tom was that good! I watched the entire concert and this song.... along with learning to fly were my favorites. I guess he used some "canned" tracks for the echoes, but I felt that as a whole it was a masterful performance! Kudos to the band! Without them... a front man is nothing....

  To pipe in on a comment earlier, I have never seen this song as talking about suicide or death in any way. Just a broken heart love song (no pun intended), which can make a person feel like they are "free falling".

I just thought it was a really mellow tune with nice acoustic guitar. Full moon fever was a great album.I always felt Tom Petty was underrated.He seemed very independent in terms of his music. He seemed to write the the songs he wanted and not just those that would sell.

  Then the verse "Gonna leave this world for a while" could be that he wants to escape reality by smoking some pot.
  His free falling all right...start off being happy to be free and realizing his falling to his end.

• Harry from South Bend, InSuicide wouldn't be the first thing I'd associate this with, but, when I think about it, "Free Fallin'" starts out talking about not even missing her, but, toward the end, it's almost as if the narrator realized what he's done, and how he does miss her. "Free Fallin'" may not be as much about suicide as it is just escaping the scene of relationships, but, either way, it's one of my favorites by Tom Petty.

He loves the idea of human contact but is unable to properly deal with it and furthers himself into isolation.

I had family that lived in Reseda and back then the 101 freeway DID run right behind people's back yards. Back then Reseda did go up to Ventura Blvd. At some point many years ago they changed where the city's boarders were and now that part of Reseda that meets the 101 freeway is called Tarzana.
