90s Metal

by Greg Prato

As evidenced by the title of my 16th book overall, Survival of the Fittest: Heavy Metal in the 1990s, metal in the '90s was one of the toughest periods ever in the history of the genre.

Seemingly overnight, bands that were arena headliners and chart toppers were considered out of style, while newer bands embracing more real, honest, and cutting edge styles were in demand. However, there was a happy ending to the story - heavy metal managed to survive... and continues to thrive.

Did you embrace newer acts like Primus, Kyuss, and Marilyn Manson, stand firm and continue on with Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Guns N' Roses…or listen to a little bit of the old and new? Either way, this quiz (including quotes/facts from the aforementioned book) should be a fun challenge for metalheads of all ages!

  • Erin from Baltimore, MdLike KC from NH, I’m not a big metal fan, but I too got all but one right! (In my case, it was Phil Anselmo’s back that I got wrong.) Some of these are just too weird not to be true.
  • Megan Parsons from MiamiAnd I mean hipster in the less pejorative way possible. This is one of modern music's most influential figures and one of my all time favorite musicians

  • K.c. from NhOK, this is weird. I am NOT a fan of metal, yet I got all but 1 right! (It was the Axl Rose one, with the phone call.) Oh, and if you ask, "Why take the quiz if you don't like metal?" it's because I love quizzes & pop culture.
