Metallica

by Greg Prato

In the book Birth School Metallica Death, Volume 1: The Biography, authors Paul Brannigan and Ian Winwood retrace and analyze what many fans consider to be the golden era of one of heavy metal's all-time great bands.

It wasn't easy for the group during this time. They were going against the grain of what was considered "safe" musically by the mainstream, their bass player Cliff Burton died just as the band was breaking through, and they were bickering with ex-guitarist Dave Mustaine in the media. But it all equated to a string of albums from 1983 through 1991 that sold zillions of copies worldwide, and made them a global stadium headliner.

Metallica was also one of the hardest touring and hardest drinking bands of the era. Can you separate the fact from the fiction?
