Adele

Adele Adkins. We know her better as just plain "Adele." It didn't take long for the "Skyfall" singer to join the ranks of other performers whose surnames became mere superfluous attachments: Cher, Madonna, Sting, Bono, Beyonce, and Charo (yes, Charo), to name a few.

In fact, Adele's rise to fame seemed less like a climb and more like an express flight. After just one live TV performance, her debut album 19 skyrocketed on the US charts and the British songstress was officially an international star. But overnight success is never really overnight, is it? Before releasing a string of hits like "Someone Like You" and "Rolling in the Deep," Adele spent hours training her voice to mimic Jazz legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Etta James. She spun every heartbreak into song, sometimes with ferocity, other times with an aching loneliness. You may be able to belt out all the lyrics to her soulful repertoire, but how much do you really know about Adele?
