Songfacts®:

  • "Lie To Me" finds the guys heartbroken over a love that's not lining up.

Now I wish we never met
'Cause you're too hard to forget
While I'm cleaning up your mess
I know he's taking off your dress
I know that you don't, but if I ask you if you love me
I hope you lie, lie, lie, lie, lie to me

Drummer Ashton Irwin explained in the band's Cocktail Chats (episode 2) that the song is about how "it hurts when you're in a romantic situation and the other person is in it for reasons that you aren't."
  • Sonically, "Lie To Me" came about from Irwin's desire for "a song that had a Police "Every Breath You Take"-type guitar mixed in with a groove from a modern, urban song."
  • This was penned the day after 5SOS wrote "Youngblood." Bassist Calum Hood recalled that Ashton Irwin and songwriter Andrew Watt (Camila Cabello's "Havana") "were sitting on the couch and they had the, 'lie, lie, lie, lie' and we're all like, 'Alright, let's come back in tomorrow and we'll finish the idea.' And that's how we got 'Lie to Me.'"
  • Five Seconds Of Summer released a new version of "Lie To Me" with singer-songwriter Julia Michaels as Youngblood's fourth single. The remixed version finds Michaels exploring the female side of the broken relationship.
  • Directed by Brandon Vaughn (Bastille, Migos, Travis Scott), the song's music video was filmed at the Irwindale Speedway in Los Angeles. The clip shows singer Luke Hemmings brooding on the roof of an abandoned car. At the climax of the visual, two other cars crash into either side of Hemmings' automobile, creating a fiery combustion. Ashton Irwin explained that it portrays the numbing yet explosive feeling of heartbreak: "The 'Lie To Me' video represents to me when someone closest to you is in a toxic situation, and they take an emotional beating over and over. With no attempt to escape. It's absolutely heartbreaking."
