Songfacts®:

  • This pounding, anthemic song has a motivational message of determination to push on until you have achieved success.

    I'm a champion
    Comin' for the top
    Got no limits, always winning
    And it ain't gonna stop
    Now I'm taking aim
Got the goal in my sights
And I don't care what nobody say
'Cause I'm doin' it my way

Lead singer Michael Hobby explained to Rolling Stone that he and guitarist Bill Satcher originally started penning "Starting Fires" as a message of encouragement to a friend of theirs who "had hit an unexpected hiccup in his athletic career." As they were writing the song they began to see more of themselves in it. The two realized that they were "actually writing the lyrics as more of a note-to-self to keep fighting through our own self doubts and struggles." It became a reminder to themselves of who they are and to carry on fighting for their dreams, especially in tough times.
