Songfacts®:

  • Co-written by Nashville songwriters Kim Williams ("Three Wooden Crosses") and Philip Douglas ("Kiss This"), this love song from Tippin's second studio album finds the country singer contrite after treating his significant other badly and possibly driving her into the arms of another man.
  • In the early '90s, country music was experiencing a shift away from traditionalism and into "New Country," a hybrid of country and pop that propelled the likes of Garth Brooks and Billy Ray Cyrus to fame (see "Achy Breaky Heart"). Tippin, a self-proclaimed hillbilly from South Carolina with a voice to match, was in danger of becoming too country according to his record label, especially with this song. He explained in a Songfacts interview: "'My Blue Angel' was particularly important to me, because there had not been a country-blues yodeling song at the top of the charts in 40 years till that song came along. There were a lot of folks at the record label who said, 'That song's not a hit, it's just too country.'"
  • This peaked at #7 on the country chart.
